Trace USMS Custody Releases

To find someone released from U.S. Marshals Service prisoner custody after an Onslow County connection, follow the federal case and the actual detaining facility. USMS manages federal pretrial, transport, and court-related custody, but it does not offer a public prisoner or release locator. A local jail departure may be a federal transfer rather than community release. Verification therefore combines the federal docket, a lawful facility record, a later BOP result when sentencing follows, and a focused records request for existing USMS disposition information.

USMS Tracking Record Limits

The USMS Prisoner Tracking System contains more than the public can retrieve through a locator because no public USMS prisoner locator exists. Agency materials describe identifying, court, confinement, safekeeping, and disposition information used for prisoners pending federal proceedings. A FOIA response remains subject to exemptions, privacy review, and redaction. Request the narrow existing disposition or movement record needed for the identified federal case instead of asking for the whole internal file.

Contract detention also separates legal custody from physical location. USMS may retain federal authority while a county or other facility houses the prisoner. The facility can document its own admission or departure, while the federal docket documents the court order and USMS holds the broader tracking record. When Onslow County Detention Center is one holding site, its release entry ends only that local episode. A later contract site or BOP admission must be verified independently.

USMS Release Identity Checks

Keep the federal case number with every custody record. It connects the docket, contract facility, local Onslow disposition, and any later BOP entry while reducing the risk of matching a different person with the same name.

Review USMS Release Timing

Timing should remain cautious. USMS policy does not make prisoner arrival or departure times public through a locator, so no routine processing hour can be promised. A docket order may precede transport or facility processing. Record the order date, the local disposition date, and the date of any later BOP entry as separate facts. If the interval is unclear, ask the facility for the public record it maintains.

NC SAVAN may report the Onslow jail’s status change, but it does not become a USMS locator. Save the county alert and confirm whether Sheriff Booking recorded a transfer. The federal docket then supplies the legal case, while the actual detaining facility supplies its custody record. If a sentence follows, the BOP register number becomes the best identifier for the next phase.

A focused FOIA request should name an existing record, not demand a newly created narrative. Ask for the identified prisoner’s disposition or movement record within a defined date range, cite the federal case, and include the known Onslow episode. USMS can apply exemptions and redact protected information. The response may confirm less than the internal tracking system contains.

Never fill an unavailable arrival or departure time with an estimate. State the documented order, transfer, confinement, or later BOP event and preserve the gap.

USMS Onslow Custody Paths

The U.S. Marshals Service handles prisoners tied to federal proceedings, including pretrial detention, transport, court appearances, safekeeping, and movement between contract facilities. It is not the same as the Federal Bureau of Prisons. BOP mainly manages sentenced federal custody. A person can spend time under USMS authority before any BOP admission appears.

Onslow County Detention Center can house federal prisoners according to county budget material. If its release record says the person went to USMS, that means the local facility ended its part while federal custody continued. The correct wording is transfer to federal custody. A later release from a contract jail, dismissal of the federal case, bond order, sentence, or BOP commitment must be confirmed through the source that created that event.

Important: “Released to USMS” is continued custody, not a release into the community.

Confirm USMS Custody Release

USMS has no public prisoner locator. Its prisoner-information policy also restricts public release of personal histories, photographs, and prisoner arrival or departure times. A current name search cannot fill that gap. Start with the federal case number and docket, then identify the jail or detention facility that physically held the person.

  1. Obtain the federal case number and match the defendant carefully.
  2. Read the docket for detention, bond, dismissal, judgment, commitment, and transfer events.
  3. Identify the detaining or contract facility from the available record.
  4. Ask that facility for the lawful public disposition it maintains.
  5. Search BOP when a federal sentence and commitment may have followed.
  6. Use a focused USMS FOIA request for existing disposition records not otherwise available.

The docket explains legal authority. The detaining facility records physical custody. A later BOP record documents the sentenced prison phase. None should be stretched beyond its role. If an Onslow record names USMS but the federal docket later shows release on conditions, verify the facility departure rather than assuming the order was processed at a specific time.

Federal Docket Release Evidence

A federal docket may show an initial appearance, detention order, bond decision, release conditions, dismissal, plea, judgment, commitment, sentence modification, or later supervision event. Those entries can explain why authority changed. They do not automatically reveal where a prisoner was housed or the precise moment transport occurred.

Docket eventWhat it can establish
Release orderLegal authority for release on stated conditions.
Detention orderAuthority for custody to continue.
DismissalEnd of the listed charge, subject to other holds.
Judgment and commitmentSentence and basis for movement toward BOP custody.
Supervision filingLater court action involving community supervision.

Pair the event with a custody source. A release order may coexist with another case, detainer, or receiving authority. A judgment may precede transport. A dismissal can end one matter without ending all custody. The federal case number is the best anchor for matching these events to the person and the agency record.

Note: Court authority and physical departure are related records, not interchangeable facts.

USMS Records Request Route

The USMS Freedom of Information Act route is a records process, not a live release check. The agency’s Prisoner Tracking System contains identifying, court, confinement, safekeeping, and disposition data, but public access is subject to FOIA exemptions. A narrow request is more likely to identify the existing record and reduce unnecessary review.

Public route: USMS Freedom of Information Act office
No public prisoner locator
Use federal case number, subject identifiers, custody date range, and the exact existing disposition record sought

State what is already known: full name, federal case, date range, Onslow County Detention Center episode if relevant, and the specific custody or disposition field requested. Do not ask USMS to create a timeline or answer a broad question it does not maintain as one record. Redactions and exemptions can limit what is released, and the process is not suited to urgent confirmation.

Onslow Jail to USMS

The Onslow Sheriff app lists current county-jail inmates but is not a federal archive. When a federally held person disappears from that list, call Booking and request the maintained release or transfer disposition. The record may show return to USMS or another facility. That local entry closes only the Onslow building’s part of the custody chain.

Next, examine the federal docket and any named receiving facility. If the person later enters BOP, search by register number. A BOP result with a named institution shows the sentenced prison phase. A past release date or RELEASED location shows departure from BOP custody, not necessarily the end of federal supervised release or another authority’s custody.

The Federal BOP release locator page covers that later stage. If the person never entered BOP, the docket, contract facility, and USMS records path remain the primary sources.

Separate USMS Release Systems

USMS custody is often confused with BOP, ICE, NCDAC, and county detention. Each has a separate database boundary. USMS has no public prisoner locator. BOP has a locator for sentenced federal inmates. ICE ODLS covers immigration detention and qualifying recent releases. NCDAC OPI covers state prison and supervision. The Sheriff owns the Onslow County jail record.

Wanted-person pages are not a released-prisoner database. A warrant status does not show where a person left custody or when. Use the case and custody identifiers instead of a broad name match.

Verify Final USMS Disposition

A careful conclusion states the last confirmed event without filling gaps. The Onslow jail may document a transfer to USMS. The docket may later show bond, dismissal, sentence, or commitment. A facility record may document departure. BOP may document a later prison release. If no source confirms community release, describe only the transfer or last known custody stage.

Identity matching matters. Use the federal case number, date of birth when lawfully available, local booking number, BOP register number, and the detaining facility. Similar names and transport between contract sites can otherwise produce a false connection. Preserve the source and time of each check.

USMS custody
Federal pretrial, transport, court, or safekeeping authority.
Contract facility
A jail or detention site holding a federal prisoner under an agreement.
Disposition
The recorded outcome of a custody episode.
FOIA
The federal process for requesting existing agency records, subject to exemptions.

The strongest verification is a linked sequence, not one missing roster name: local disposition, federal court authority, physical custodian, and any later BOP phase.
